Week 3 (The Must See Week) Monday, 18th July Wagogo From Memphis to Mozambique to Mexico, Wagogo is an Albuquerque based reggae and world beats band featuring songs in Shona played on authentic instruments, with some modern roots. The band memebers are an ecclectic group of musicians that make a rhythmic cocktail out of their Chicano influences, Northern Mexico folk songs, warm calypso island grooves, and the captivating spirit music of Zimbabwe. Their lyrics possess an equally enriching quality, being composed mostly by lead singer Armando Ortega, in a blend of Spanish, English, and the Shona language of Zimbabwe. With such a diverse repertoire, Wagogo inspires a multigenerational crowd to dance and sing with its dedication to preserving the traditional roots of music, in addition to exploring new sounds. Check out their music at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/wagogo2 Sister Carol Grammy nominated reggae star, Sister Carol, grew up in the slums of Kingston, Jamaica. Embodying the sounds of her native land, her music crackles with Rasta rhythms and rapping. Jay Trachtenberg from Record Reviews has this to say about her: “In a genre so often awash in a tidal wave of testosterone, it's always refreshing to hear from a woman, and no female reggae artist has more to say or the ability to say it more convincingly than Sister Carol. Also known as Mother Culture, the Brooklyn-based DJ/singer is back with another thoroughly conscious set of roots music that sparkles with witty verbosity and an acute sense of social reality.” Tuesday, 19th July Pat Malone Trio Exciting fresh new jazz featuring archtop and acoustic guitars played with soul and virtuosity. Ripping tenor sax solos and an all-star rhythm section.
